Think carefully before you
register any domain.
Lets imagine your 'well known' company name is Mathew and Son and you've
been doing business in a city called The Back of Beyond for
donkeys years. Obviously you are about to register
www.mathewandson.whatever and so you should or, should
you be doing something else as well.
When it comes to registering domain names too many people overlook the
obvious by doing what they think is the obvious thing to do.
The first name on most people's minds is to register the name they have
been trading under for all those years - and you should too.
But you should also think carefully about the value of
registering close variations of the same name.
For instance www.women.com is a major
ezine but if one of their readers types in
www.woman.com by mistake
they will arrive at a very different site.
So, if Mathew and Son makes bells and whistles wouldn't it make sense to
register
www.bellsandwhistles.whatever as well?
Think about it because if you don't somebody else will and you may will lose a
valuable internet marketing opportunity. Why? Because
outside The Back of Beyond no one really knows, much less
cares, who Mathew and Son really are ... they just want some
bells and whistles and that's exactly what they will type
into a search engine.
A name can make all the difference.
Register your main trading name by all means. It's essential you do that.
But make sure you consider all options and register some
useful variations as well.
Spending a few dollars now could make (or save) you a fortune in the end. |
